Lumi is a portable AI-based assistant for people with visual impairments and reduced autonomy. In May 2026 I presented it at EUROINVENT, the European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation, where it received a Diploma of Excellence and I received the Youngest Inventors Award.
Here are three things the project taught me.
The user comes before the feature list. It's easy to keep adding features because they're fun to build. With assistive technology, every extra step is a step someone has to do without seeing the screen. Simple wins.
Explaining is part of building. At the exhibition I had a few minutes to explain Lumi to people who had never seen it. If I couldn't say what it does in one sentence, the problem wasn't the audience.
Age matters less than you think. I was the youngest inventor there. The judges cared about the problem and the solution, not my age.
Lumi isn't finished. But it changed how I think about everything I build, including this website, which I tried to make readable, keyboard-friendly, and calm when you ask it to stop moving.
